Christmas, the season of goodwill, is also the season of distractions in the office. If you say, “Bah Humbug!” to the disruption Christmas brings then you are probably less than enthusiastic about Secret Santa or the office party. But like it or not, there’s no escape. There’ll be Christmas music on the radio, decorations around the desks and excited chatter about holiday plans. Christmas is coming, so you may as well embrace Christmas office traditions and use them to your advantage!

’Tis The Season To Be Out Of Office
As Christmas approaches offices begin to feel eerily deserted. Once people start breaking up for Christmas it’s nearly impossible to get hold of anyone, so get your important jobs tied up well in advance. Don’t be the person stuck with unanswered emails and unfulfilled promises. Bear in mind that seasonal suppliers will be busy so order your corporate Christmas gifts or Christmas supplies early. Christmas can be the most hectic time of year and the more you get done before the “out of office” emails start appearing, the better!
Get The Party Started
You may prefer the idea of curling up on the couch with a hot chocolate than socialising with the colleagues you see day in day out. If so, the Christmas party may not appeal. But office parties are a great opportunity to network with people you don’t usually talk to on a day to day basis, forge relationships with your co-workers and let your hair down! If you were the party organiser you can also bask in the gratitude of the attendees. (Just draw the line at dancing on the tables singing bad karaoke, Bridget Jones style.)
It’s The Thought That Counts?
A great way to break down barriers with your co-workers at Christmas time is to get involved with the office Secret Santa. But be careful! Secret Santa doesn’t always stay secret. If enough people spill the beans about who they’re buying for, your recipient may work out that you’re the one responsible for the novelty reindeer underpants. Though unusual Christmas gifts can be fun, not everyone has the same sense of humour, so if in doubt, play it safe with a bottle of champagne or a box of luxury chocolates. Classic gifts are less likely to backfire, especially if you’re buying for your boss!
Don’t Get Snowed Under
Amidst all the festive preparations in the office, don’t forget to plan for your own Christmas. Businesses are making it as easy as possible for you to buy, buy, buy so take advantage! Keep an eye out for seasonal offers from November onwards and make the most of useful services like gifts delivered directly to your recipients. Your presents, food and even Christmas tree can all be delivered straight to your front door at home, or your office desk. (Though your office is probably not the best place for the tree!) Make time to wrap your presents and buy your goose and your home will be as idyllic and peaceful as the cheesy Christmas films.
Get On Santa’s Good List
If you want to promote Christmas spirit (of the non-alcoholic kind) rally co-workers to raise money for a good cause. Give people an hour to decorate their desks, with a prize for the most festive, have a mince pie bake off or keep your fundraising traditional with some Christmas carols. When you choose your charity, consider local causes to really make a difference to your community and get that warm fuzzy feeling!
Christmas is a time for celebration! With some planning and preparation the gifts, parties and increased workload that Christmas brings will all be under control… and that really is something worth celebrating!
