Does chocolate have any nutritional value?
This is a tricky question as the answer is both yes and no!
Good quality chocolate, eaten in moderate quantity, has been identified by scientists as having anti-oxidant properties which are beneficial for your health. Cocoa beans contain polyphenols, an anti-oxidant found in both green tea and red wine, which has been associated with cardiovascular health.
Quality chocolate is also a good source of important vitamins and minerals including magnesium, copper, iron and zinc, and cocoa butter can even help reduce cholesterol.
On the other hand mass-produced, inferior quality chocolate is low in cocoa content and high in processed fat and refined sugar, so offers none of the protective benefits of its superior quality counterpart.
So to take advantage of all of its health benefits it’s definitely worth opting for chocolate with a high cocoa content.
